Greensboro event gets new sponsor; elevated to top-tier status
PGA Tour logo sign is shown at the PGA Tour Grill Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024 at Jacksonville International Airport in Jacksonville, Fla. It did not take long for the venerable PGA Tour event in Greensboro, N.C. to procure a new sponsor.
Wednesday, the tour announced that Raymond James, a wealth management company located in St. Petersburg, Fla. will replace Wyndham as the title sponsor of the event in 2027.
Michael Brennan just captured the final Wyndham Open on Sunday.
The PGA tour has stopped in Greensboro every year since 1938, when the tournament started as the Greater Greensboro Open. Wyndham began its 20-year sponsorship in 2007, but did not attempt to renew its agreement.
The event will have a new name -- GO by Raymond James -- and will be one of roughly two dozen tournaments which will be a part of the top-tier PGA Tour Championship Series by 2028 as part of a multi-year agreement.
The GO by Raymond James will remain in its current spot on the tour calendar, with play taking place Aug. 5-8, 2027 at its current home, Greensboro's Sedgefield Country Club.
Raymond James also holds naming rights for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers' stadium through 2027.
"The PGA Tour's Greensboro event has one of the richest histories in men's professional golf, and we are proud to continue building on its longstanding legacy and local charitable impact with the support of our new partners at Raymond James," said Dhruv Prasad, PGA Tour chief commercial officer in a statement. "Greensboro has supported the PGA Tour for nearly nine decades, and we are excited to launch this new chapter by bringing the best players in the world to the Piedmont Triad region."
Five other PGA Tour events -- the Sompo Championship, The Sentry, the Travelers Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Cadillac Championship -- have secured spots for the 2028 Championship Series.
Current Signature events, including the Truist Championship, RBC Heritage and Genesis Invitational, are expected to secure their spots for 2028.
